What is Barrow Theatre Institute (BTI)?

Barrow Theatre Institute is an arts education program providing after-school/work and weekend workshops for all ages. Classes will be offered in all areas of performing and creative arts – such as audition preparation, stage presence, musical theater dance, voice, acting, technical theater, playwriting and creative writing, public speaking, and more – all taught by experienced professionals. All classes take place at the Barrow-Civic Theatre unless otherwise directed.

Fall (September-December 2017)

 

Movement for Actors (Adult, 15+)

Sept. 30 – Dec. 2 (10 weeks)  |  Saturdays, 11a-12p
Instructors: Casey McVay and Hannah McCarthy
Cost: 
$100 ($90 in full)

This workshop is designed to open up the body, increase flexibility, achieve more confidence, learn choreography from your favorite musicals, and become a more fit actor, ready to take on your next dance audition or musical role. It will feature fitness, relaxation, improv, and dance coursework, and is appropriate for any actor, beginner through advanced.

 

Voice 1 (Junior Youth)

Sept. 26 – Dec. 5 (10 weeks) (No class Nov. 7)  |  Tuesdays, 5-6p
Instructor:
Zachary Covington
Cost: $100 ($90 in full)

Students will learn the basics of breath control, vocal production, and artistry, both individually and in groups. (Male students in Grades 7-8 with changing/changed voices should contact the instructor about participating in Voice 1 for Sr. Youth.)

 

Voice 1 (Senior Youth)

Sept. 26 – Dec. 5 (10 weeks) (No class Nov. 7)  |  Tuesdays, 6:15-7:15p
Instructor: 
Zachary Covington
Cost: $100 ($90 in full)

Students will develop the basic skills of healthy tone production. Focus skills include posture, breath control, free-tone production, vocal support, ear training, and artistry. All students should be prepared to sing in groups and individually.

 

Acting 1 (Youth)

Sept. 27 – Nov. 1 (6 weeks)  |  Wednesdays, 5-6p
Instructor:

Young actors are welcome in this drama class to learn theater history and the basic skills of acting, such as projection and pronunciation, improvisation, and staging, through scenes and monologues.

 

Acting 1 (Adult, 18+)

Sept. 27 – Nov. 1 (6 weeks)  |  Wednesdays, 6:15-7:15p
Instructor:

Adults are welcome in this entry-level drama class to learn theater history and basic skills of acting, including improvisation, staging, monologues, scenes, and a little bit of Shakespeare.

 

Makeup F/X Workshop (Adult, 15+)

Saturday, Oct. 14, 9a-3p
Instructors: Lily Rice and Jenna Ronchi
Cost: $85

Just in time to create the perfect halloween character, this
one-day workshop starts at beginners level covering the fundamentals of FX makeup! Your day includes lessons, demonstrations, and hands-on learning of styles, makeup brand knowledge, and more. This course is taught in the Barrow-Civic Theatre’s dressing room with large mirrors and lights. Included in this course are a makeup and character kit, lunch, and beverages. Space is limited. Pre-registration required.

 

Improv-ination (Children)

Oct. 14 – Dec. 2 (8 weeks)  |  Saturdays, 9-10a
Instructor:

Cost: $80 ($70 in full)

An introduction to the world of theatre through improv and imagination! Children at any experience level will learn about ways in which theatre can build self-esteem, confidence, and teamwork skills. We will use warm-ups and theatre games to explore our vocal and physical instruments, and learn how our imaginations can unlock skills that can be called upon throughout the rest of our lives.

Winter (January-February 2018)

 

Preparing for an Audition (Adult, 15+)

What does it take to win your next audition? This workshop will teach you techniques used by acting professionals, including choosing the right song and monologue, preparing a resume, cold reading, voice projection, filling out paperwork, interacting with auditioners, and dance audition tips. Participants will also have headshots taken and receive mock audition experience.

Dance for Actors (Youth)

Get ready to razzle, dazzle with improved skills and dance confidence! The class will include a technical jazz warm-up with focus on strengthening and flexibility, and include instruction featuring combinations from Broadway shows as well as original choreography.

Instrument Making (Children & Youth)

Kids love to make things, and make sound! This is a special workshop for kids, as young as four, to make simple instruments, and more complex instruments for older kids and teens. Guardians are welcome to work alongside their kids to learn and construct these custom pieces.

 

 

Spring (March-May 2018)

 

Voice & Acting Combo (Adult, 18+)

Actors will learn how to strengthen their voice and acting skills in this springtime workshop and is designed for actors of all levels. The focus of this course will be to train your body and voice to support your emotional work, through exploration of techniques. Whether it’s losing distracting physical habits, projection, mastering a dialect, of giving your vocal instrument a tune-up, this workshop will leave you with the skills to improve your craft.

Mini Mozarts Workshop (Children)

Students will explore the world of music through singing, playing, instruments,  movement, dancing, reading, and collaboration.

Voice 2 (Youth)

Designed for Jr. Youth and Sr. Youth who took Voice 1 in the fall.

Playwriting and Directing (Senior Youth)

With the help of a professional scriptwriter, students will work on pieces of writing they’ve already drafted to create and develop an advanced original one-act play, as well as explore the basics of directing their work. Participants will have the opportunity to submit their finished scripts to our annual Youth One-Act Festival to be held in the summer.
