A one-day acting workshop and comedy improv showcase with guest instructor, Sean Whalen. Sean, from Los Angelos, CA, is a professional actor, writer, producer, and acting instructor with over 25 years of experience of working in Hollywood.

Enhance your repertoire of characters and improv skills in this high-energy workshop with special guest instructor, Sean Whalen! Sean teaches students to commit to the truthfulness of the comedy an actor is working with, deal with all possible choices in a scene, open up to the possibility that they truly have a unique and interesting sense of humor and to trust it, have more fun with improv, and engage in “play” as a craft. In this workshop, Sean will lead improv games and scene work to hone an actors skills of listening, being present, and getting out of their own heads!

ABOUT SEAN

 

Born in Washington, D.C., Sean was the youngest of four and raised in Silver Spring/Olney, Maryland, and graduated from Sherwood High School. He moved west and graduated from UCLA four years later. Sean studied and performed at the famed Groundlings Theater. He also studied the Meisner technique at Playhouse West.

Sean’s career began with commercials, appearing in spots for Little Caesar’s Pizza, TJ Maxx, and many others. His most acclaimed commercial was the first GOT MILK? commercial, directed by Michael Bay.

His first major film role was in PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS directed by Wes Craven. Other films include MEN IN BLACK, CHARLIE’S ANGELS, BATMAN RETURNS, TWISTER, HALLOWEEN II, NEVER BEEN KISSED, JURY DUTY, THAT THING YOU DO, EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH, and WATERWORLD. He has appeared in independent features including VILLISCA, HATCHET 3, LAID TO REST, PYTHON, ALL SUPERHEROES MUST DIE, and THE FP.

Television offered many comedic and dramatic roles in shows such as ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA, CONSTANTINE, CRIMINAL MINDS, CASTLE, REVENGE, NYPD BLUE, MY WIFE AND KIDS, LOST, and FRIENDS. He’s worked on shows for Disney and Nickelodeon and has a recurring role on the soap BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL and the NBC comedy, SUPERSTORE.

Sean has written several screenplays (one which is currently being produced by Brett Ratner and Jeff Nathanson), TV pilots, punch-up work on several cartoons, and a couple of short films. One short, TURKEY.CAKE., which he wrote and directed, won at the Rehobeth Beach Film Festival. He is currently writing, producing, and directing comedy shorts for his web channel, THATGUY – SEAN WHALEN on YouTube.

Sean currently teaches at and is the founder of the comedy department at NOTS COMEDY SCHOOL and teaches improv, scene study, and auditioning workshops across the country. He is also getting into the world of independent features as a producer and writer.

What is Barrow Theatre Institute (BTI)?

Barrow Theatre Institute is an arts education program providing after-school/work and weekend workshops for all ages. Classes will be offered in all areas of performing and creative arts – such as audition preparation, stage presence, musical theater dance, voice, acting, technical theater, playwriting and creative writing, public speaking, and more – all taught by experienced professionals. All classes take place at the Barrow-Civic Theatre unless otherwise directed. Our mission is to use an array of artistic exploration opportunities to enrich and empower individuals of all ages through high-quality creative arts education.
